A wind mitigation inspection documents a home's wind-resistant construction features on Florida's OIR-B1-1802 form. Insurers use the form to apply windstorm premium discounts for features like a hip roof, roof-to-wall clips or wraps, and impact-rated windows and doors.
The seven areas on the form
- Building code the home was built under
- Roof covering and its permit date
- Roof deck attachment
- Roof-to-wall attachment
- Roof geometry
- Secondary water resistance
- Opening protection
Is it worth it?
For many Florida homeowners, yes. Windstorm coverage is a large part of the premium, and insurers are required to offer credits for qualifying features. The credits only apply when the features are documented, and that is what the inspection does.
How long it lasts
Insurers generally accept the form for up to five years, as long as the home hasn't changed. A new roof or new impact windows are good reasons to get a new one.
